Anonymous asked: To your post about STI/STDs. People think it can't happen to them, and choose not to use protection but the truth is it can. And it's sad that we really can't trust people.. even our loved ones. Today I found out I have HPV which is an STI that can cause cancer - and my doctor said he thinks I have the pre cancer cells already. HPV is forever. I actually got the shot to pro-vent it but guess what? I still got it because I trusted someones words. And now I have to live with it the rest of my life
I’m so sorry to hear that you got that news. It’s an easy mistake to make, especially as a young person. HPV is the most common STI in America, and unfortunately there is no way to test men for it unless they have visible warts. (You’re right about HPV causing cervical cancer, but other kinds of the virus cause warts).
Don’t let your doctor scare you too much, abnormal cells on a PAP are pretty common. Follow up on all your tests, and while HPV isn’t curable, a young person with a healthy immune system can sometimes fight it off all together.
If you were having sex (unprotected) before you turned 21(when you get your first PAP) chances are you’ve already gotten and fought off HPV at least once. The reason they don’t do a smear before you turn 21 is because they were over-diagnosing pre-cancerous HPV in young girls who would almost always test negative on their next pap. I had that experience as a young teenager before they changed the age.
That being said, everything you feel is valid. Finding out you have an STI is extremely violating, and doctors often don’t do a good job of providing helpful information.
I wish you the best of luck with the next few months, and if you ever need to talk about sexual/reproductive health issues please never hesitate to ask anon or not. I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ll give you supportive, judgement free advice to the best of my ability.
The huge amount of pressure on young girls to let their boyfriends get away with everything and not to stand up for themselves, lest they stop being a ‘chill girlfriend’ and instead become a horrible, controlling harpy is such bullshit.
Stop teaching young girls that demanding to be treated with respect and courtesy makes them shrill, over-emotional, or unworthy of listening to.
